Wallpaper...

      What is your wallpaper?
I'm not talking the lovely floral border along your bedroom wall--I'm talking character wallpaper, the handsome man on your work desktop who continually reminds you, 'YOU SHOULD BE WRITING.' Yeah, well -- I gotta keep a roof over my head as well, and since my stories aren't quite doing that, I gotta work.
Dash Mihok
Currently, this man is my 'work' wallpaper-- Dash Mihok. But in my mind right now, he's Dr. Casimir 'Casey' Rupp. I keep him there to remind me that yes, I should be writing, but he's also there to keep my co-workers wondering just who he is! And, when they ask, and I explain, for the most part I get that 'you-have-people-in-your-head-and-they-talk-to-you?' look. All writers know that look. And after said look, I smile, they wander away and I go back to my business of writing for work, and writing in my head (those 'people,' you know!)
Sean Casey-adorable!
In the past there have been more recognizable folks as my wallpaper--Russell Crowe, Jim Cavizel, adorable Sean Casey (who doesn't answer my Tweets!)
But right now, it's Dash. Some writers have entire folders of their characters, and I do admit, I have a folder with a few photos in (mostly baseball players)--but the wallpaper posting seems to work better for me, it's like 'Casey Rupp' is with me all day long and therefore, my writing is with me as well.
Yeah, he's a regular.
And, since I just finished the first draft of the story in which Dash is the model, I'm going to have to start thinking about changing that wallpaper...alas, the next story, I'm thinking I'm back to Russell Crowe---I think he'd make a great Toledo Police detective, don't you? (Too bad, he already has!) His love interest, the delightful Rachel McAdams. I think they'd make a wonderful couple.
Ah, yes -- so this is how the mind of a writer works. Sadly, it seems only other writers understand that.
So, if you see your coworker glassy-eyed and gazing at some unknown male on their desktop, don't think them mad, just gently pat them on the shoulder and say, 'Write later, but now go back to work.'  They'll thank you for just understanding!
     Happy Wall Papering!

I never considered wallpapering at work. What a great idea! I do have a file folder full of potential heroes and heroines (and another for villains). When I see a photo that screams "hunky hero" I clip and store for the future.

I love this post, Wendy, I do have one of those character/clip folders. I haven't used a hero as wallpaper for a while, but you've inspired me to do that again. (And, yes, Russell Crowe, awesome Toledo Detective)
